Shit me, this looks well sick. Fucking Title Fight! In Bristol! In, like, just a couple of months! With Rolo Tomassi too! Rad to the rad yo! Sad thing is that it’s over three venues, two of which are my least favourite in bristol. The “fucking shithole” that is the O2 & the “no fucking stage diving or you get thrown out hellhole” that is the Thekla. Both are on my “venues to boycott list but guess I’ll pass that by for a lineup like this!

Bristol’s Slapstick Festival

I know I almost exclusively talk about music on here but it just so happens that I also help organise Bristol’s world renowned Slapstick Festival which starts today. People literally travel here from around the world to check it out IT’S THAT GOOD. So for one post only I’m branching out into repping that over music. 

The festival began mainly with the intent to showcase the comedians from the early days of cinema, most famously your Chaplins, Lloyds, Keatons & the Laurel & Hardys.

We’re 9 years old now and over that time we’ve branched out to include ALL silent / visual comedy. Hence we’ve had such guests as Terry Jones, Rob Brydon, Shappi Khorsandi, Michael Palin, Barry Cryer, Victoria Wood and many more join us over the years. 

The centrepiece of each years festival is Friday nights gala. Below are some images which give you a pictorial insight into what to expect from it this year.

Been stupid stupid busy of late. Mainly coz I’m now doing this reviews editor stuff for Louder Than War.


Anyway, got to Simple Things last Sunday. 13 mad hours with considerably more bands than that. Got to all the participating venues (go the fuck me) and can safely say I’ve never done as much dancing in one day before.Factory Floor, Bo Ningen & Big Joan were massive highlights, only Grimes was a slight disappointment. Bristol bands featured heavily in my days roistering. If you’re curious I wrote over 2000 words about it all here.

Naturally the day could’ve done with more punk & more reggae, but I would say that.

Sa Gravenhurst for the first time. They rock in a modern folky kind of way. Made me angry tho look:

Annoyingly though, gentle music like Gravenhurst doesn’t tend to work at festivals like this, there were way too many drunken oafs talking throughout it. After 3 songs I knew if I hung around any longer I’d spontaneously combust with the effort it was taking me to contain my spleen, so instead I made a dramatic, huffing exit which I have no doubt was utterly missed by those who my hufferry (hufferring?) was directed at.

Anyone else coming to Simple Things on Sunday? If so you can go to this page on Last.fm & it’ll tell you how many of the 43 bands you’ve scribbled. Can anyone beat my 37 / 43? Fair play to ya if so. Dunno really who I’m mostly looking forward to. Factory Floor mebe after missing their show @ Arnolfini last year. Or Bo Ningen. Grimes.  Or course headlining the thing’s Squarepusher. So here’s a video off his soon to be released next album.
