I dont wanna be that person who mocks foreigners mastery of the english language so believe me when I say that if more people mimicked Grim Brides statement in their approach emails & cam straight out with it & said “you like fuck noisy music” they’d be more likely to get my attention than half the smarmy arsed approaches I get from UK bands.

By way of the hugest contrast you’re ever likely to see (between two abutting tumblr posts) I went to see How To dress Well last night. “How To dress Well” is the stage name of ethereal R&B songwriter and producer Tom Krell. Curious night, it also had the excellent Typesun and Face+Heel on the bill so I assumed there’d be much in the way of dancing. There wasn’t. There was a LOT of swaying on the spot, eyes closed & the like & it was all vay emotive but boogie town it wasn’t.

Fractured falsetto was fractured.

It also marked my first trip of the year to bristol’s least favourite small venue The Thekla who have either taken the “no stage diving” signs down since last I was there (for Touche Amore) or didn’t expect there’d be any of such last night. Haha!

Half the reason I was down was to see Typesun if I’m honest so you may as well take a video of his “The PL” while I’m about it.

Despite that though it’s still got the power to proper crush all that gets in it’s way AND FOR THAT VERY REASON you’re advised to track down a copy asap yo.

Is by relative newcomers on the scene False Light (est 2012 their arsebook says) & is released by the joint might of Headfirst!, Dead Chemists & Downside. Majoring in the grandest grinding powerviolence, this probably comes in somewhere near the top of the list (still a figment of my imagination) of the filthiest music I’ve ever thrown your way, and by dint of that very same fact it’s also near of the top of that other list (also a figment of my imagination) of best music I’ve ever thrown your way.

Tracking down physical may be tricky, suggest you start with the band & work outwards via labels ending up at the powerviolence swap shop (yep, also a figment of my imagination). You want digital you can either grab shit from False Light’s bandcamp for 7 of their US dollars or (and I’m presuming this is straight up, if not someone tell me quick & I’ll take the link down) you can click on this mediafire link which I got off the band’s aforementioned arsebook page & grab shit for nowt. Who remembers when Arabrot played the stag & hounds & no one turned up cept me, the other bands, the promoters, the bar staff & one or two other herberts? I got a bit cross with Bristol in general for being so fucking gig apathetic. “Gigathetic” i didn’t call it at the time as i was too busy being pissed off to think up cracking witticisms like that.

Well anyway they’re coming back in another show promoted by the same people who who put on the Bongripper / Conan / Humanfly / War Wolf gig & the Haxan Cloak / Necro Deathmort / ERAAS / Blakk Metal gig (aka “the two best gigs of the fucking year so far”). So…more power to the promotera, You’re Not Human, arm eh?

The two have put an album out featuring an original use of strings: cello, violin, guitars and a full string quartet which diverts the traditional perception of those classic instruments when they deal with electronics.

clipping.’s album midcity is easily one of my top 10 albums of the year thus far in. we’re supposed to be running a top 50 albums midway thru the year on Louder Than War. not sure what i’m gonna do as our boss thinks that Savages album is the first great album of the century & I think it’s a pile of derivative, dull dreck. If Savages are going to be at no. 1 I won’t want my name attached to it so i may sit it out. If not I’ll be fighting for Midcity to be quite high in it. and I’ll be making sure that the position of Savages album is not one 100% agreed across the Louder Than War team.

You’re all gonna love the new Dead Gaze album when it comes out. It has “Subpop” stamped all over it.

For those not familiar, (Cole) Furlow (who is Dead Gaze) places a huge emphasis on texture in his work as Dead Gaze, with every song being deliberately overprocessed to create a near-palpable crunch. Behind the production are catchy, Americana-influenced guitar, synth melodies, and heart-on-your-sleeve lyrics, with each song attempting “to capture a very memorable moment,” in Furlow’s words.
