Can’t beat a bit of Staff Benda Bilili, the band of whom every review stresses that they’re ‘Congo’s most famous disabled street musicians’ when probably it’d be accurate to call them ‘the worlds most famous disabled street musicians’ if one must allude to the fact that some of the band are paraplegic, (I’m guessing as the film about them is based around this fact it’s something they like to ‘work’ for their own benefit which makes it ok? I dunno - discuss)
Anyway this band are fucking the business. Their gig at colston hall last year was a blinder, the whole band dancing non stop. Even the audience didn’t let the fact that they were kind of staid, stiff upper lip, upper middle class, upper middle aged very white & probably most pertinently english stop them from dancing.
And now, by jove, they have a new album out soon. Wikipedia says they play “rumba, with elements of old-school rhythm ‘n’ blues and reggae”. I’d go along with the rumba but after that it’s all SBB & SBB alone.
