New On Southern Lord. Hessian - Manègarmr

“Named after the wolf that - in Norwegian mythology - devours the sun every night, their debut record focuses both sonically and lyrically on the endless cycles of destruction that are imminent to this life and the world in which we live.  From the soaring take-off of “Ascension”, via the treacherous calm of central pieces “Vāmācāra” and “Father of Greed”, to the merciless onslaught that is “Mother of Time”. With towering guitars, frenzied drum patterns and savage vocals that sound like the howl of the lone wolf, Manègarmr is a furious blizzard of cold Black Metal, violently crashing into a maelstrom of ultra-metallic dark hardcore.

New on the mighty Dischord - Red Hare, Be Half. New album (Nites of Midnite) out soon (May 21st) co-released with Hellfire,

The band is basically a continuation of the late ’80s D.C. hardcore band Swiz.

The members have also played in Bluetip, Retisonic, Dag Nasty, and Sweetbelly Freakdown.

Good stuff.

There was this guy at the Bongripper, Conan, Humanfly & War Wolf gig the other day photographing the show. I managed to get him to send me a load of his pics from the show to accompany a review I was doing for Louder Than War.

He also sent me a link to this video.

The idea is to give people a sense of what the show was like in 2 minutes.

Fair play to him, he kind of did it yeah?

Oh, and my review you can find here:

Bongripper, Conan, Humanfly & War Wolf: The Exchange, Bristol – live review

(Although if you’d rather stay Tumblr bound check out my mate Jed’s review over at his Last Time I Saw Tumblr).

Seriously, you tell me a band sounds like Fugazi & Fucked Up chances are you’re making a mistake. Either they totes don’t sound like either in which case I’m pissed you tricked me into listening to it or they just sound like a blatant rip off band and I’m pissed you tricked me into listening to it.

Either way, 99/100 times you lose PR dude.

Fist City have one of each. One of Fugazi & Fucked Up they don’t sound like at all, & one they sound like a blatant rip off of.

You choose which is which.

(I’ll also qualify the above by saying I’ve just listened to the track 3 times straight thru.)

Plaids - Twelve

There’s something wrong with a world in which something this awesome can have been on Soundcloud for 4 days & has still only registered 125 plays.

Rattly old school Wire meets Minutemen is awesome. Short, fast songs & hollered vocals. Love it. They’re off on tour soon & typically aint coming anywhere near Brizzle. Jeez, I dunno what’s happening to the city this year, so many bands skipping it.

They have an ep out soon, a split with equally good band Football, Etc. Both from Nottm. The city’s on a roll atm.

Zolle - “Trakthor”. Cracking track from experimental doom metallists. “Meaty riffs & beefy drums” it says on the Soundcloud page which’d be fine if I hadn’t been vegan since ‘89. Will let em off this time though. In addition there’s input from members of Ufomammut/Supernatural Cat/Quasiviri/Runi who make guest infiltrations bearing drunken gifts of synth throughout the duration of Zolle’s ruckus.

WOLF X DOWN (GER) / TRUE VALIANCE / + MURDER CIRCUIT @ THE CROFT, BRISTOL

Been gone a long time eh? Mainly cuz I’ve been away (Harlech again) & then catching up on all the writing / editing stuff that had piled up while I was away. Oh, and a little bit i’ve been going to gigs.

Shit me WOLF X DOWN were on the money last night. First proper HC gig of the year, either the local scene’s been hibernating or I’ve just been way out of touch for some reason. Or of course we were just really spoilt last year and one or two HC shows every quarter of the year is about normal.

To be honest though, judging by how tense the atmosphere was in the front room of the Croft last night before Murder Circuit started I’d say I wasn’t only who person who’d been waiting for this too long.

Quote of the night came from  MURDER CIRCUIT - “We paid 6 quid to get over that cunting bridge, least u could do is like our fucking Facebook page”. Fair point well made, esp as the band probably only made a fiver on the night.

TRUE VALIANCE did a bit like this only a bit harder & more for real. Fucking A:

WOLF X DOWN did a bit like this, seriously prowled & owned the place:

Good night. Don’t wanna wait so long for my next HC show ever again please.

Big Ups are from New York and play heavy, pendulous riffs with frantic almost desperate vocals. Fusing elements of post-punk with rock, punk and noisiness, you can listen to ‘Fresh Meat’ below, which is taken from their split with Flagland. The band are currently finishing up their debut album so keep an ear out for some more slightly unhinged crackers from Big Ups. If you are anything like us, you will be chomping at the bit to hear it.

Deffo got that Big Black thang going on. Check out their Bandcamp for more.

Time to get a little Norwegian pagan folk into your lives via Wardruna. They’re currently in the middle of a trilogy “interpreting the runes of the elder futhark”.

“Aren’t we all” is, I think, what we’re supposed to say now.

This is them performing the song ”Helvegen” for the first time at Castlefest in Lisse, Netherlands in August.

Mesmerised people are mesmerised.

This is awesome, harsh, dirty, electronic noise. DIY punk for a new generation.

Tiz off a soon to be released compilation, out 8th Apr I think. The album’s full of similar such brilliant stuff.
